Mega Lifters to Implement Lower Tariff at Pasig Port Starting June 1

MARCH, 2024 – Mega Lifters Cargo Handling Corp., the newly appointed operator of Pasig Port, announced it will implement reduced cargo-handling tariffs starting June 1, in response to growing concerns raised by port users.

The revised rates, which are lower than the originally stipulated Tier 3 tariff under the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Port Terminal Management Regulatory Framework (PTMRF), aim to ease the burden on shippers, consignees, and small businesses relying on the Pasig Port for vital trade routes, particularly to and from Palawan.

Mega Lifters took over management of the port in April 2024 after securing a 15-year contract in May 2022, and has since been committed to improving operations while listening to stakeholder feedback.

“We heard the concerns of our stakeholders loud and clear,” said Mega Lifters in a statement. “The original Tier 3 rates, while compliant with PPA AO 10-2019, proved too steep for many users, especially in comparison to historical tariffs paid under the former operator.”

Responding to Stakeholder Clamor

Following multiple consultations and case-by-case reviews, Mega Lifters conducted a comprehensive internal assessment of the Tier 3 tariff system. As a result:

  • Certain general cargo classifications have been unbundled to reflect more realistic pricing
  • Socialized rates are now applied to specific items like returning empty fish boxes, crates, and drums
  • Adjustments were made despite the risk of lower revenue, with user affordability prioritized

This move aligns with the long-standing appeal from Pasig Port Users Against PPA Tariff Increases, a group that includes domestic carriers, consignees, and the former lessee Movers and Managers Corp. The group had earlier reported business losses of over 25% due to the steep hike when Tier 3 was implemented on May 1.

Operational Improvements

In tandem with the tariff adjustments, Mega Lifters has rolled out several operational upgrades:

  • Deployment of three brand-new forklifts to streamline cargo handling
  • Implementation of a cargo queuing and staging system to manage traffic along the apron
  • Restriction of non-traditional vehicles (e.g., tricycles and kuligligs) from direct vessel access, improving safety and order

These efforts aim to enhance the efficiency, safety, and reliability of services at Pasig Port.

Commitment to Service

While the PPA maintains that port charges constitute less than 5% of total logistics costs, Mega Lifters recognizes the ripple effect of tariffs on businesses and consumers. The company reiterates its commitment to responsible port management, transparent communication, and collaborative solutions with all stakeholders.
